Description

Fresh off the experimental pop highway, guitarist-singer-songwriter Tomás Jensen comes to us bearing the fruit of his latest musical escapades. Quelqu’un d’autre is an album that winds through musical landscapes tinged with latin, rock and electronic flavours, all ubiquitously accompanied by a superb string orchestra.

Biography

I was born in Argentina, and was sent to France at the age of eight, after spending two years in Brazil (but that’s another story). I wrote my first song at the age of sixteen (why I got into that, go figure…). Back then, I had two main influences: Renaud, Brassens, and Sylvio Rodriguez (I know, I know, that’s three, but that’s the way it works). Every year during school, I gave a few concerts (nothing really). Then with my Master’s degree completed (in Anthropology), I joined an artistic commune that was very active in my region at the time. Operating deep within France’s countryside, the Ishtar collective was comprised of twenty-five young idiots with a common desire to revolutionize the art world (the stage, in particular). After two years of activity with these guys (involved in contemporary dance, song, Brazilian percussions, experimental and children’s theatre, etc.), I decided to come to Québec for a six-month visit…that was 9 years ago!

Between 2000 and 2006 I gave many concerts (700, more or less) with the free polyglot dancing impertinent group Les Faux-Monnayeurs. We played a wide range of venues in Québec, across Canada, even in the Yukon, from the smallest bars to the largest festivals. We also did some TV and radio. And I put out five albums: Au pied de la lettre (2000) and Pied de nez (2002), both independently produced; Check engine (La Smala, 2002), under the name Les Faux-Monnayeurs; Tomás Jensen & les Faux-Monnayeurs (GSI Musique 2004); and Pris sur le vif (GSI Musique 2006), a double live album.

For the past two years I’ve been in and out of Paris, working with French musicians on an electro-latin-rock project called BOCA. They are all seasoned players (they’ve worked with bands such as La Mano Negra, Noir Désir, Manu Chao, Amadou et Mariam, and Tarmac). Thanks to their experienced musical contribution, we have recorded a killer demo and are presently searching for a solid producer of international calibre.

Right now, I’m putting the final touches on a sixth album, produced by François Lalonde (Jean Leloup, Lahsa, Dobacaracol…), this time without Les Faux-Monnayeurs. This is a turning point for me, heading towards a new musical universe, one with “urban” influences (although I prefer to call it “electro, with experimental pop”) Most importantly, it’s a more personal universe, which makes me very happy.
